Is there any good reason to dive and snorkel in Cozumel?

Cozumel is a top international diving destination! It’s perfectly located on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest barrier in the World. Cozumel’s reefs are protected by Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park, it is strictly forbidden to touch or remove any marine life within the park boundaries.

In 1956 a Mexican film director, Rene Cardona, shot the movie Un Mundo Nuevo, an underwater documentary of what is now known as Cardona Reef. A year later the film was translated into English and broadcast in the United States as A New World. Cardona’s movie is often mistaken with Jacques Cousteau’s 1956 documentary Monde du Silence, but it was Cardona’s film that brought the crystal clear waters of Cozumel to the spotlight. Cousteau’s first visit to Cozumel happened until the late 1960s, years after the island’s dive industry was well established.

Cozumel Island is home of the splendid toadfish. An endemic species commonly found under coral outcroppings.

There are over 30 diving sites around the Island, all of them with significant importance and abundant marine life.
